tessa had already promised herself that her visit to the moonpool was a way of proving herself and nothing more. of course, the young she-cat was always one hundred percent sure that the clan structure needed to be destroyed, that the clans were an unfair group and deserved what was coming. however, there was only one person who she loved and cared about in the clans. that was her brother, emberpaw. before she had said goodbye to him, she had promised him that she wouldn't forget him. he had probably never envisioned that tessa (or hollypaw, as he knew her) would return to the clans with such a goal as this, but the she-cat had kept her promise. she had never forgotten her brother. through all the hateful thoughts toward the clans, she managed to keep her brother separate. emberpaw, she reminded herself, had experienced the unfairness of the clans himself. only he had been too weak to leave as tessa had.
now, tessa thought, it was time for her to let go of her brother. to the gray and brown she-cat, the moonpool had always been a symbol of the clans and everything they stood for. everything they thought they stood for. since tessa was a kit, she had been fed lies about how the clans would protect her. they thought that their methods ensured that everyone stayed safe and that all cats would have a fair chance at life. but their rules only restricted cats. their traditions only oppressed those who had the strength to do something more with their life other than become a warrior.
sitting beside the moonpool, tail curled tightly over her front paws, these were tessa's thoughts. there was not a fleeting feeling of disloyalty in her. and starclan? the pathetic excuses for cats thought some imaginary ghosts could save their stupid clans? their misled traditions? their false sense of freedom? starclan didn't exist. it never existed. when a cat died, it died. there was no more to it. and prophecies. tessa almost laughed. there was no predicting the future. you had to make your own future. there was no such thing as a cat's destiny. you decided what you wanted to do. there was nothing controlling you.
and the clans believed it. her brother believed it. lying down, tessa rested her head on her paws, recalling memories of times with her brother. training with him. play-fighting with him. hunting with him. she couldn't both love her brother and hate the clans. there was no time for indecision in the midst of a battle - a breaking point tessa couldn't wait for. there was no room for indecision in the position of right paw. her mind was already made up. she loved her brother. but she hated the clans more.
